ANVUR Category Schema

Schema Scope

The ANVUR subject category schema corresponds to the official academic fields and disciplines list for Italian Universities Research and Teaching.

The ANVUR schema is organized around 17 broad categories. Because of the method use to produce this schema (see below), not all Web of Science subject areas will be represented in the mapping. Additionally, a MULTIDISCIPLINARY category has been added to the broad ANVUR categorization, to which the Web of Science category Multidisciplinary Sciences has been mapped.

Schema Type

Category-to-category mapping where ANVUR categories are mapped to current Web of Science subject areas.

Method

The ANVUR category schema corresponds to the official Academic Disciplines list for Italian Universities Research and Teaching, and this mapping exercise was the result of a cooperative effort between ANVUR and Clarivate Analytics and is foundational for a bibliometric analysis carried by ANVUR in 2013. The study is required to develop indicators of international standing in research in the Italian scientific fields across which ANVUR assesses the quality of university research. The study is conducted in the framework of the ANVUR Evaluation of Research Quality exercise (VQR 2004-2010).

The mapping considers the proportion of articles submitted by Italian researchers to the Evaluation of Research Quality 2004-2010 (VQR) in a given ANVUR category; the relationship between Web of Science subject area and ANVUR category can be determined by measuring the extent to which the two correlate. Each article submitted by a researcher to a given ANVUR category will have noted a corresponding Web of Science subject area, so a Web of Science subject area was mapped to the ANVUR category code with of the greatest share of publications for that Web of Science subject area. A Web of Science subject area may have been mapped to more than one ANVUR category if: 1) The proportional share of Web of Science documents for the foremost ANVUR category code was greater than 50% and the proportional share of Web of Science documents for the second ranking ANVUR category code was greater than 25%; 2) The proportional share of Web of Science documents for the foremost ANVUR category code was less than 50% and the proportional share of Web of Science documents for the second ranking ANVUR category code was greater than 20%.

Web of Science subject areas for which fewer than ten (10) publications were submitted in the VQR 2004-2010 have been excluded from the analysis, which means not all Web of Science subject areas will be represented in the schema -- including most categories from the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI).

The mapping of Web of Science subject area to ANVUR category must be reviewed periodically because Web of Science subject areas may change from one year to the next.
