Citation Topics re-clustering and UN Sustainable Development Goals mapping update

The Citation Topics schema has been updated as part of the annual re-clustering based on documents citations. The 2025 schema update is available on the Citation Topics page. As result the SDG to Micro-Topic mapping has been updated as well, and the new mapping is available to download in the UN Sustainable Development Goals schema page.

  • 10 Macro topics - No changes
  • 326 Meso topics - No changes
  • 2478 Micro Topics:
    • 31 new topics
    • 1441 for which the label changed
    • 1006 labels remained unchanged

The Carnegie Classification has released updated research activity categories for 2025, based on revised evaluation criteria. The new designations include:

  • Research 1 (R1): Institutions with very high research expenditures and doctoral degree production — 187 institutions.
  • Research 2 (R2): Institutions with high research expenditures and doctoral degree production — 139 institutions.
  • Research Colleges and Universities (RCU): Institutions meeting research criteria that do not fall under R1 or R2 — 216 institutions.

To support continuity and comparison, the Pre-2025 Carnegie Classifications will continue to be accessible alongside the updated designations, recognizing that both the category definitions and institutional groupings have undergone significant changes.

  • US: Carnegie Classification - Research 1: Very High Spending and Doctorate Production (R1)
    • InCites includes 186 as “Purdue University Indianapolis” 
  • US: Carnegie Classification - Research 2: High Research Spending and Doctorate Production
  • US: Carnegie Classification - Research Colleges and Universities

The April data refresh has been released today, which includes Web of Science data up to the 31st March 2025.
