Schema Scope
The CAPES classification schema was created by the Foundation CAPES, linked to the Ministry of Education, in order to facilitate the evaluation and skills improvement of superior education staff in Brazil. CAPES stands for Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior.
The CAPES classification hierarchy is broken up into three levels: nine (9) broad areas; forty-nine (49) evaluation areas; and one hundred twenty-one (121) more granular sub-areas. Data on research performance in higher-level fields incorporate data on research performance in subordinate fields.
For example, a report on research in the broad area Health Sciences (code 6) will include data on research in all nine subordinate evaluation areas (6.1 to 6.9). A report on research in the evaluation area Physical Education (6.8) will include data on research in all three subordinate sub-areas (6.8.1 to 6.8.3). However, because of journal overlap between Web of Science subject areas, the figures for the higher-level fields will not necessarily equal the sum of the subordinate fields.
All Web of Science subject areas are represented in the mapping. Typically, each Web of Science subject area is mapped to a single CAPES category. But in four (4) cases, a single Web of Science subject area is mapped to multiple CAPES categories: PSYCHIATRY; PUBLIC, ENVIRONMENTAL & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH; REHABILITATION; SUBSTANCE ABUSE
See more details on the scope of each evaluation area.
Schema Type
Category-to-category mapping where CAPES classifications are mapped to current Web of Science subject areas; current as of March 2017.
Method
Category elements within the CAPES category schema were compared to scope notes for the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI). Each Web of Science subject area was assigned to one (or occasionally more than one) of the 121 CAPES sub-area subject codes (with a single CAPES category often mapped to multiple Web of Science subject areas). To complete mappings for the highest two levels (i.e., 49 evaluation areas and 9 broad areas), higher level elements inherited all the Web of Science subject areas assigned across their subordinate elements.
The mapping of Web of Science subject area to CAPES category must be reviewed each year since Web of Science subject areas may change from one year to the next.
