Schema Scope
The Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization (RIS3) for Latvia was developed in 2014 to concentrate public R&D investment in programs that create future domestic capability and inter-regional comparative advantage. The 14 RIS3 schema categories are mapped to the corresponding Web of Science categories.

Method
The Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization (RIS3) sets seven RIS3 specialization fields:
- Knowledge intensive bio-economy
- Biomedicine, medical technologies, and biotechnologies
- Advanced ICT
- Smart energy
- Smart materials, technology, and engineering
- Social Sciences and Humanities
- Other
Latvia has defined the RIS3 specialization fields as the driver for new economic policies in relation to smart specialization. Each category above is further classified in to core and related. We have mapped each of the above categories to the corresponding Web of Science categories.
